In the training session example, Darby Laai practices a sample IELTS task from Part 1 of the test. The English Teacher follows the task prompt, and he waits until the appropriate time to deliver his feedback comment.
English Teacher: Is reading popular among young people in your country?
Darby Laai: I am not really sure any more. I don't think so, no.
English Teacher: Why not?
Darby Laai: I think it is primarily due to the fact that...did I say it right?
English Teacher: Keep going.
Darby Laai: I think young people have easy access to the internet and all of the applications that are not connected with reading that go with it. For example, social media, picture applications, games.... Even the dictionary speaks through the phone these days.
English Teacher: Uh huh. Do you like reading books?
Darby Laai: Absolutely.
English Teacher: Why?
Darby Laai: The reason is simple. I learn new things every time I read a book.
English Teacher: What kind of books do you dislike reading?
Darby Laai: I would have to say books about how to teach grammar.
English Teacher: Oh? Why?
Darby Laai: Don't get me wrong...I think some of them are really good. I just don't like reading them and that was the question right?
English Teacher: When was the last time you read a book?
Darby Laai: Yesterday.
English Teacher: Why?
Darby Laai: I suppose it is because I go to the library almost every day and every time I go I read for at least an hour...and I went to the library yesterday as well...so I read a book about log bridge construction.
English Teacher: I see. Here is your feedback comment. You used a natural alternative expression for “because” when asked for a reason...this is important for grammar and vocabulary. For example, I liked how you used "The reason is simple" and "I suppose it's because". and "I think it's primarily due to the fact that..."
Darby Laai: OK thank you.
